Bikes on Buses

All Kern Transit buses are equipped with bike racks to make your trip easier. Follow these steps to safely load, secure, and unload your bicycle.

  • Each bus has a front-mounted bike rack that fits up to three (3) bikes.
  • Note: The general length of the bike racks measures about 27 inches long (24–30 inches allowable), measured 18 inches from the ground.
  • When the bus arrives at your stop, tell the driver that you plan to use the bike rack.
  • Load your bike from the curbside only.
  • Squeeze and hold the release handle on the rack, then lower it until it’s horizontal.
  • Place your bike into one of the available slots on the rack.
  • Extend the wheel lock over the front tire to secure your bike.
  • Remove any loose items from your bike (like backpacks or water bottles) before boarding.
  • Board the bus carefully. Let the driver know when you're done loading.
  • When you’re ready to leave, notify the driver, then unload your bike from the rack.

Important: Riders are responsible for loading and unloading their bicycles. Use the racks at your own risk. If you’re unsure how to use the rack, ask the driver for help. Always remove loose gear and make sure your bike is securely locked in place before boarding.
